Letter from the Chairman

Dear Member,

I am writing on behalf of the joint committees of the Assurance Medical Society and Association of Medical Underwriters to update you on progress with the merger of these two organisations.

First, I must inform you of one major decision which has been made by the interim joint committee in relation to the name. On review several members felt the original suggestion was rather long winded and lacked reference to underwriting. After some discussion it was voted the named should be changed to the Assurance Medical and Underwriting Society (AMUS). This is easier on the tongue and is a convenient amalgam of the previous acronyms. We feel this is an appropriate change and really hope you agree.

We have been putting together a programme of events for 2010. The inaugural meeting and AGM will be held at Butchers’ Hall, 87 Bartholomew Close, London, EC1A 7EB on Thursday 25th March 2010. It will be a half day seminar from 12.00 noon through to 5.00pm and the theme will be “Managing Risk in a Changing World”. We have three excellent speakers lined up as follow:

Professor David Spiegelhalter - Improving the public understanding of risk

Dr. Nicola-Alexander Sittaro - Enhanced annuities: where we’ve been and where we’re going?

Dr. Geoffrey Robb – Underwriting diabetes: do trials help?
Dr. Robb’s presentation will include life and annuity case studies to bring a practical element to the proceedings.

Proceedings will commence with lunch and refreshments and will end with drinks and canapés. We feel we should start with a bang! Formal invitations will be circulated shortly – please do put this date in your diary as it would be great to see a good turnout at the first joint meeting.

The other dates for the year are:

Tuesday 8th June 2010 – Speaker – Professor John Betteridge: “Good cholesterol, bad cholesterol – do they really matter”.
Venue - RAF Club, Piccadilly

Tuesday 5th October 2010 – Full day conference in Manchester – venue to be advise

Wednesday 24th November 2010 – Evening meeting in London – venue to be advise

Please also place these dates in your diary – we look forward to seeing you at as many as possibl

Another important task has been the amalgamation of the member listings. It has been decided not to continue with corporate membership and so only individuals can be members of the AMUS. We hope this letter has been addressed to the appropriate person at previous corporate members. If not, please forward it to the relevant party. We do hope you will continue to support the new society. Individual membership will cost £35 per annum and there is no limit to the number of members per company / organisation. We believe there are many non-financial benefits of joining the AMUS. However, we propose the fees for meetings will be lower for members (or a substitute).

To continue your membership please complete the attached form and follow the instructions for payment. It is no longer possible to pay by direct debit. Please ensure you provide details of your e-mail address, as , in future this will be the medium we will be looking to utilise to communication to the members. A new website is being developed and it makes sense to utilise this to aid our communication and arrange the events.

We are really excited about the AMUS and feel it can add true value to its members. Please do show your support and let us have your membership forms as soon as possible.

We look forward to seeing you at one of the events.

Kind regards,

Calvin Cole
Chairman of AMU
